What this paper is about
This paper is based on the premise that mathematics is a social endeavour evident everyday in the world around us and that we learn mathematics by listening to, and sharing ideas with others. It explores the idea that when mathematics is learnt through the understanding of concepts alongside rule-based procedures, there is a greater understanding and implementation of the mathematics involved in our everyday life.
For those enrolled in the BTchng programme, the paper provides a foundation for the compulsory mathematics education papers on the second and third years of the degree.
How this paper will be taught
This is a 100 level option paper with an overall time commitment of 150 hours.
Students are required to complete the equivalent of two 2-hour tutorials each week for the 12 week duration of Trimester A. Students need to allocate some of their out-of-class time to complete assigned tasks, including weekly contributions to their on-line reading discussion forums.
